EXCEPT Questions
When you see a question that says all of the following are true EXCEPT, it’s basically asking what is false. When I see questions like this, I recommend reading it without the word EXCEPT. As soon as I eliminate the word except, I know now that I am looking for three things that do work, that are true. When I find the three true ones, it should expose the one that is false, thus being my correct answer.
Let’s look at a simple example.
All of the following are red EXCEPT:
- Apple
- Cherry
- Banana
- Strawberry
Now, our brains when we see it’s asking about red things, and see a list of three red things, our brain can only think red. Our brains like to find the things that are correct. So, it make it easier on ourselves, let’s get rid of the EXCEPT, so the question becomes:
All of the following are red:
- Apple
- Cherry
- Banana
- Strawberry
Now the question is so much simpler, my brain likes to pick all the red stuff. I know that a, b, and d are all red!
All of the following are red EXCEPT:
- Apple
- Cherry
- Banana
- Strawberry
What’s left over, the thing that is NOT red, the EXCEPT, the correct answer. So now I know to select C!
Now this is a super simple example, but the idea is the same when is comes to insurance. Try it out next time you see an EXCEPT question.
